Documents For Foreigners/ International Visitors

Valid passport – Used to verify immigration status & identity
Valid foreign driving license – Carry the original license issued by your home country
International Driving Permit (IDP) – Strongly recommended for all international drivers to avoid traffic check delays, especially if your home country license is not in English or you are planning to drive for extended periods.
Valid Entry Visa – Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), visa printout, or entry stamp verifying legal entry into Kenya.
Travel Itinerary or Proof of stay – Flight details and hotel booking.
Payment method – Credit card/ debit card, bank transfer, or M-Pesa where available.
Security Deposit – A refundable security deposit will be required, especially for higher-value SUVs and luxury vehicles.
Rental agreement & insurance – Ensure you have full commercial rental insurance and remember to carry a copy of the rental agreement inside the vehicle at all times.

Is an International Driving Permit (IDP) compulsory?

Not in every case. If your home country license is in English and conforms to the required format, that is sufficient. But at the same time, an IDP becomes very important in helping authorities interpret licenses issued in other languages, and provides additional international documentation if you are stopped by traffic police.

Important Things to Know Before Driving in Kenya

Side of the road – Always keep left (Steering wheel on the right)
Speed limits – Urban areas/ cities (50km/h), open highways (100km/h), national parks and game reserves (30-40km/h).
Police checkpoints – Always common along highways; pull over calmly, present your documents, and be polite.
Traffic hazards – Watch out for unexpected speed bumps, aggressive drivers, pedestrians, livestock, and motorcycles commonly referred to as bodaboda.
